{SideBody} Rhytidectomy (Facelift)

Changes in facial appearance due to aging do not occur suddenly - they develop slowly and involve different regions of the face in progressive stages. Beginning in our third decade, the elastic fibers of the dermis (the fatty tissue below the skin) and the deep layers of the superficial fascia (the firmer, supporting tissue below the skin) begin to undergo degeneration and are replaced by fibrous connective tissue. Fibrous connective tissue is a looser, less supportive type of tissue which, when present, causes the skin and face to show signs of aging. The pull of gravity compels this increasingly inelastic and weaker supporting structure of the facial skin envelope to descend, resulting in facial lines that become etched along the sites of attachment between the skin and the underlying muscles of expression.

The facelift operation is designed to improve the inevitable effects of aging by elevating and redraping the various areas of loose skin and muscle folds of the face and neck. Age is not as important as the specific appearance of the individual; therefore, men and women of almost any age can potentially benefit from facelift surgery. Traditionally, two groups of patients derive the greatest benefit from facelift surgery: a) the younger individual who wishes to forestall the signs of aging and maintain a youthful appearance, and b) older individuals who wish a more dramatic correction of the signs of aging found in the face and neck. Excellent and more enduring results can be obtained in those patients of the younger age group, in whom the underlying tissues are more elastic, but the potential benefit at any age is significant.

Dr. Alford employs a variety of the most advanced surgical techniques that involve tightening and elevating of the skin, deep muscles and fatty tissues of the face and neck. Each operation is tailored to match the individual's facial structure, goals and desires to create a natural appearing improvement without that "operated" look. Incision lines are fine, hidden as much as possible either in or along the hairline and behind the ears. These incisions become almost invisible within several weeks of surgery. Patients can return to most normal social and business activities within two weeks of surgery.

Facelift surgery will smooth out wrinkles, lift sagging jowls and refresh facial tissues, thereby giving the face a more youthful appearance; however, genetic factors, smoking, sun exposure, stress, diet, and other environmental influences can impact the outcome and longevity of any facelift. Patients are urged to discuss these issues with Dr. Alford as part of their decision-making process.

Dr. Alford's philosophy and technique aim at providing the patient with the best, most enduring structural corrections while keeping a natural, soft look. His intention is that you present a more youthful, refreshed appearance that will seem natural and not surgically rendered. Our goal is to assist you in looking better, not different.
