{SideBody} Blepharoplasty (Eyelid Surgery)

Eyelid surgery (technically called blepharoplasty) is a procedure designed to lift, remove and reposition sagging and bulging tissues from the upper and lower eyelids. Eyelid surgery can correct drooping upper lids and puffy bags below your eyes - features that cause you to look older and more tired than you feel and may even interfere with your vision. Bulging fat in the lower eyelids ("bags") can be a characteristic in certain families and may occur as early as in the late teen years. Sagging skin and eyelid wrinkles often appear in individuals as young as the late twenties, and by the age of forty are quite common in both men and women.

Correction of the aging eyelid can provide one of the most dramatic improvements possible with aesthetic facial surgery. In this surgery, Dr. Alford removes excess skin from the upper lid, camouflaging the incision in the upper lid skin fold. The lower eyelid incision is hidden immediately below the eyelash line or inside the pink part of the lower eyelid (conjunctiva). Excess skin may be removed, weak muscles can be tightened or smoothed and herniated fat is corrected.

While blepharoplasty will not totally eradicate pronounced or fine creases lateral to the eyelids ("crow's feet," "laugh lines"), the overall impact of blepharoplasty surgery is to "wake up" the face and provide the patient with years of improved and younger appearance. The result is always a more alert, brighter, refreshed facial appearance with a very short recovery period (usually one week or less).

The eyes are the windows to the soul and blepharoplasty can help to open that window for a sunny and more youthful appearance.
